What do i need to do right now to prepare for college?
Freshmen....Here is a little breakdown of what you should do your freshmen year of high school. First off, come up with a four-year high school plan of some sort. What courses would you like to take, including electives? What kind of grades do you want to make, throughout your four years, to help you get into college? Next, what are you interested in doing after high school? Look into careers/jobs that interest you and think of the possibilities for you, after high school. Talk to your teachers, family members, etc. about the careers/jobs that interest you. Next, participate in extracurricular activities. Look into sports you enjoy, school clubs, band, ROTC, or even volunteering in the community. Take it upon yourself to meet your high school counselor. Your counselor can get to know you and help you throughout your high school years! Also, look at summer activities; such as volunteer work, an internship, etc. One more thing, start saving for college! It is never too early to start saving, especially with how expensive it can be. And lastly, keep up your grades and awesome work ethic! Your GPA will be looked at by all colleges you apply to, so take pride in it by giving your all in school!
Sophmores....Go ahead and check in with your counselor again. Ask about AP/Dual credit classes that you may be interested in. Listen for information pertaining to PSAT. You can use the results to see what you might need to focus on to increase your SAT scores. Take advantage of the college representatives that come to visit Brandeis. Ask questions and get information on the colleges! They come to visit with the student body, so take advantage of it! Continue to take part in those extracurricular activities and/or volunteer work. Universities look for that kind of involvement on your college application! Start looking into scheduling campus tours with colleges you might be interested in. Visiting the campus and learning more about that particular school will help you make your decision on which college you will attend after high school. And lastly, keep up your grades and awesome work ethic! Your GPA will be looked at by all colleges you apply to, so take pride in it by giving your all in school!
Juniors....If you haven't done so yet, volunteer! Colleges love to see what you have done, outside of school. There are websites out there to help you figure out where to volunteer your time. You can also get teammates or other students, in an organization you are involved in, to volunteer as a group. Preparing for the SAT and/or ACT should be on your list too. Check out testing dates to get a better idea of the time frame you have to get ready to dominate that SAT/ACT test! Check out workshops, books from the Career Center and trusted online websites for practice tests and helpful information. You can never be too prepared! Develop a strong interest in something, if you haven't already. Whether it be volunteering at a certain organization or getting involved in a certain program. You can use that drive to your advantage when you start writing your essays for college admissions and scholarship. Take the time to plan out college visits and follow through! This will help you narrow down your decision. You don't have to have a set-in-stone decision made, but having an idea of potential colleges you are interested in is a good thing. And lastly, as I've said before, keep up your grades and awesome work ethic! Your GPA will be looked at by all colleges you apply to, so take pride in it by giving your all in school!
